Day 2: Batumi to Mestia
Our journey leads us to the remarkable Enguri Dam, from where the majestic Greater Caucasus appears before us. Driving through the scenic mountains, we make several stops to enjoy the splendor of the landscape, personified at Mestia, a medieval village with famous defensive towers in the Upper Svaneti region. It dates back to the ninth century and the local Svan people, are known for their distinctive language and culture. The whole region is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day 3: Ushguli
Spending one night in Upper Svaneti is not enough. Today, we will venture to Ushguli and back. Ushguli is a community of five villages considered to be one of the two highest permanently inhabited settlements in Europe, with its altitude reaching 2200 meters. Compared to the somewhat more developed town of Mestia, Ushguli is even harder to access, thus preserving many of the village’s medieval characteristics, including more than 200 of the best preserved Svan towers. Incredibly, many of them are still occupied by families today. We will spend the day exploring the surroundings. The village is nestled amidst the breathtakingly beautiful mountain peaks of the Caucasus range and boasts stunning panoramic views. Overnight in Mestia
Day 4: Kutaisi City Tour and Gelati Monastery
The city of Kutaisi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. We will wander through its lively streets filled with warmly hospitable people and learning of its rich historical and cultural heritage which includes, the Colchis Fountain and the White Bridge. It is an authentic Georgian experience that will leave a lasting impression. Located just outside of Kutaisi, Gelati Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the country’s most important cultural landmarks. This is not simply a monastery: it was also an important center of science and education, with a library that housed thousands of ancient manuscripts. The monastery’s architecture is also remarkable, featuring intricate stone carvings, frescoes, and mosaics that showcase the artistic achievements of the Georgian Golden Age. Overnight in Kutaisi
Day 5: Prometheus Cave, Uplistsikhe and Tblisi
Just outside Kutaisi is a natural wonder; Prometheus Cave. Here we can actually sail through its illuminated passages on boats, marveling at stalactites, stalagmites, and the underground waterfalls that will leave us in awe. Having left Kutaisi, our next stop is the captivating Uplistsikhe Cave Town- Fortress, an ancient rock-hewn settlement. Uplistsikhe holds great historical importance in Georgia, spanning nearly 3000 years of its history. The day ends in the capital city of Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi
Day 6: Ikalto, Alaverdi and Tsinandali
Today, we focus on the whole region of Kakheti, which is considered to be the “cradle of wine”. The local winemaking method uses Kvevri, a unique ancient vessel, which had been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. We will also take the opportunity to visit two of the most important historical sites of the region – Ikalto Monastery and Alaverdi Cathedral. Founded in 6th and 11th century respectively, they have been centers of education and religious activity during the medieval period. Reaching Tsinandali we explore the manor house museum dedicated to the Georgian Romantic poet Alexander Chavchavadze. This historic residence showcases the life and work of Prince Alexander Chavchavadze, a prominent Georgian aristocrat, poet, and military figure who lived in the early nineteenth century. We complete our day at Telavi, the charming historic city. Overnight in Telavi
Day 7: Gremi, Kvareli and Sighnaghi
Before leaving Telavi, we will explore the historic Telavi bazaar, where we will immerse ourselves in the sights and sounds of a traditional Georgian market and sample some of the locally produced artisanal goods. Next, we will drive to Gremi’s Archangels’ Complex to delve into its captivating history and discover the well-preserved ruins of Gremi Fortress, once a flourishing trade and cultural center along the Silk Road. Since Kakheti is considered as “the cradle of wine”, we will then stop in Kvareli to explore its scenic vineyards and indulge in wine tastings.
